Atlantic Canada's regulated option: the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC)

If you want the option with full provincial oversight and protections, that is the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC). As a government-run service its funds and dispute handling sit under provincial accountability, and proceeds support public services. It is the only online casino actually regulated in Atlantic Canada. The trade-off is a smaller game range than the international market.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is jointly owned by the four Atlantic provincial governments, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, so the regulated option is shared across the region. ALC brought its online casino to New Brunswick in August 2020 and to Nova Scotia in July 2022; each province funds its own gambling-support services.

Are online casinos legal in Atlantic Canada?

There is no law that makes it illegal for an individual in Atlantic Canada to play at an offshore online casino, and players are not generally pursued. But those sites are not provincially licensed, so the protections of a regulated market do not apply. The clearly-legal route is the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC). For the full national picture (including the regulated markets in Ontario and Alberta), see our province-by-province legality guide.

Banking for Atlantic Canadians

Interac e-Transfer is the most reliable method for Atlantic Canadians. It moves money bank-to-bank in CAD and sidesteps the card declines some banks apply to gambling merchants (why that happens). Most casinos above support it; LeoVegas is deposit-only on Interac. See our Interac casinos guide and fastest payouts. These casinos also verify your ID before releasing a withdrawal. See our casino verification (KYC) guide.

Responsible gambling in Atlantic Canada

The minimum gambling age in Atlantic Canada is 19+. Whichever route you choose, set deposit and time limits before you play. Free, confidential help is available through each province's own addiction services, for example Nova Scotia's Mental Health & Addictions line at 1-888-429-8167, available 24/7. International sites are outside the provincial self-exclusion system, which is one more reason to play carefully. See our responsible gambling resources.

Are casino winnings taxed?

For recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada. The exception is players whose gambling rises to the level of a business. This is general information, not tax advice. Confirm your situation with a professional.

How we assess these casinos

We apply the same 10-point assessment we use everywhere, verified international licence, payout speed and reliability, CAD and Interac banking, game range, and trust. The ratings reflect operator quality; they are not a statement that a casino is regulated in Atlantic Canada. See our full methodology.
